Count of Vidigueira was an countship created in favour of Dom Vasco da Gama on December 29, 1499, forever on his legal descent by Manuel I, King of Portugal, to honour him for his voyage to India. Later on, the elder branch of the Gama family, the counts of Vidigueira, also bearing since 1499 on an hereditary basis the title of Admiral's of the Indian Ocean, were raised to the title of Marquesses of Nisa by John IV, King of Portugal, on October 8, 1646.
